Jill Scott is the only child of mother Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia in Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. Her grandmother raised her as a single child. Scott was a student at an institution called the Philadelphia High School for Girls followed by Temple University after graduating. Scott was a student in secondary school as well as working two jobs. She hoped to become a teacher of English in a secondary school. After three years as teacher's assistant and studying her goal of becoming a high school English teacher fell through. Her career began as a spoken-word artist, performing her pieces in live poetry readings. Her next collaboration was to Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by the two. At the Roots performance, she made her debut in the spotlight as an artist. She then secured collaborations, for instance, with Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. She also gained experience on stage as she performed in the Canada tour of Broadway production Rent. She was the first signing artist on label Hidden Beach Recordings label.
